Product Description
Rickenbacker 1987 RARE Lefty 4003S SPC Tuxedo Bass - #22 of 125
This auction is for a Rickenbacker 4003SPC bass guitar in the limited-run “Tuxedo” scheme. Produced in February of 1987, it is #22 of the 125-piece edition and possibly the ONLY left-handed tuxedo bass ever produced. The Tuxedo design features an all-white paint scheme, including a painted maple fretboard, black pin-dot inlays that match the side fret markers, black powder-coated tuners, tailpiece, treble pickup unit, neck pickup surround, vintage-style strap buttons, black plastic parts such as the pickguard, tuner ferules and a clear plexi truss rod cover back-painted black with white reverse Rickenbacker logo. Electronics are all-original, standard control layout of two independent volume and tone controls, a 3-way pickup selector switch, and mono output. The bass comes with its original Certificate Of Authenticity from the edition signed by John C. Hall.
It is in fantastic condition for a 30-year old instrument, with very little wear evident on the bass. Though this instrument has not been in a vault (I am at least its fourth owner), its finish and fretboard are near-mint. That said, there is a small chip and dink on the back bottom edge, the top corner on the back of the headstock and behind one of the tuning keys. Also, typical to Rickenbacker production standards of the era, the paint and clearcoats removed from the frets before the bass left the factory is not the cleanest job ever done, but is original. There was also paint and finish removed from the high end of the fretboard where it meets the pickguard. Additionally, like all Rickenbacker instruments of this era, the clearcoats have aged to a cream. Though the yellowing of the clearcoats is not extremely pronounced on this bass, it is not an even yellowing, as the neck and fretboard still show a good deal of original white.
The bass comes with its original hardshell case, which also is in great condition, though used to purpose. It also comes with the original polish cloth, still in its unopened plastic, and Rickenbacker literature from 1987, including the price guide, models poster and amp sheet.
