Product Description
*This bass was originally assembled 3 years ago but came back on a return. The body is in used condition but everything else is brand new. See the info at the bottom for more details.*
Specs
2 piece Alder body. Flame Maple top. Blue-Green Trans Burst finish. White Binding. White pickguard.
One piece maple neck. Rosewood Fretboard. 20 frets. 34" scale, 1 3/4" nut width. 2 1/8" at 12th fret. Standard profile. Side dots only. Finish matching hand inlayed crushed stone emblem. Bone nut.
Hipshot Ultralite tuners, B bridge and 3 string retainer. Dunlop Dual Design Straplocks.
Nordstrand Big Single pickups. Wired to a 5 way switch. Nordstrand 2 band preamp with Volume, and Treble/Bass cut/boost controls. Active-passive switch and kill switch.
The body was made in America from a CNC shop I used to work with. The finish was done by Marty Bell Finishing in California (one of the top finishing shops in the country). The neck was built from scratch by me, and as with all my necks, is joined to the body with steel threaded inserts instead of wood screws for superior tone and playability. The neck is finished in hand polished oil finish. All the neck hardware is brand new. All the electronics, with the exception of the 5 way switch, are brand new. The knobs and 2 way switches are brand new. The pickguard is also brand new. The battery for the preamp is inside the cavity, held in secure place by a battery clip. The cavity cover is attached using threaded inserts.
The body has some cosmetic issues, which I will gladly photograph if needed. There is one decent size ding thru the finish into the wood on the back, as well as some smaller dings/scratches in the clear coat on the back. There are a couple very minor dings and very light finish scratches/swirling on the top.
The 5 way switch pickup selector works like this...
1. Neck pickup only (single coil)
2. Neck pickup and Middle pickup (out of phase)
3. Neck pickup and Bridge pickup (hum canceling)
4. Middle pickup and Bridge pickup (hum canceling)
5. Bridge pickup only (single coil)
The 5 way switch in addition to the 2 band preamp, allow for a ton of different tones from this beast.
*This bass was originally built for stock and featured 2 pickups only (middle and bridge pickup). The bass was bought by a customer who wanted to make several modifications to it, which I tried to deter the customer from doing, but eventually did anyway to try to please the customer. He had me add the 3rd pickup (neck), make a pickguard, and lower the depth of the neck pocket. The reason for lowering the neck pocket was so that the old neck, which had a fretboard extension, would allow the extension to sit flush with the top of the body. Eventually, the customer decided after all the modifications, that the bass was not right for him and returned it. In order to refund the customer, the bass was disassembled and parted out. I sold the old neck and all the neck hardware as well as the old pickups. I decided to keep the body in hopes of resurrecting it one day. Because the new, handmade neck was made from scratch after the fact, and because the neck pocket was modified so much, the neck doesn't fit super snug to the side walls of the neck pocket and I had to make a maple neck pocket shim to get the neck to sit at the appropriate height above the body for the bridge. However, after years of doing repairs on basses with loose neck pockets, and with the addition of the steel threaded inserts to join the neck to the body, I don't think the small gaps in the neck pocket seams are a big deal sound wise or performance wise. Also, the screws I used for the cavity cover are on the bigger side, and the screw heads to sit flush with the cover (they protrude out just a little bit).*
