Product Description

From the workshop of Mr. Eiichi Sumi, one of Japan's most esteemed luthiers. Sumi is perhaps best known for making some of the finest Lloyd Loar inspired mandolins in the world. Few of his instruments enter the USA, but when I saw this one at the Takumi Ukulele booth at NAMM I couldn't resist. Sumi has no website and eschews the use of modern machinery and CNC devices, making everything completely by hand. He honed his skills in the Maruka shop in the late 1970s and early 80s making the exalted Kentucky KM 1000 and Dawg model mandolins from that era which are highly sought after today. This is a 14 fret tenor ukulele with 17" scale length, 9" lower bout, 6.5" upper bout, body depth of 2.75" at the deepest. There was a concert sized version at the show, but this is the only tenor Hummingbird in the world and the build quality is exceptional. We've sold a lot of nice ukes through the years including vintage and new Martin, Collings, Uke Brand, and others. Never have we seen or played a more distinctive and finer instrument. Premium Japanese red spruce, violin grade figured maple, maple bindings, ebony board with split parallelogram mother of pearl inlays, hand made and engraved pickguard that looks just like a miniaturized version of a vintage Gibson guard. Even has a dummy truss rod cover if the owner wants to complete the look.
