Product Description
A near perfect gigging bass with standard jazzbass pickup at the neck end and a custom hot-rail pickup that I have just fitted at the bridge end for sharper highs.
I have converted and wired it to be a stereo bass with parallel in/outputs; meaning you run the signal to two separate amps which ideally might be one big grunty bass bin and the second to give more zing from mid range and high frequencies... and both with graphics if you can get that? Then you have one each side of the drums and enjoy putting out a bass sound with deep grunt and clear highs over the top... and as well as that strength and clarity, you have people listening who cannot quite focus on the source of the bass; it's sort of everywhere!
The advantage of the parallel outputs is that when you play a small gig and just want to take a small bass combo, just use one guitar lead into either output and it's a mono bass again.
Peavey basses are probably only halfway up the guitar fashion ladder, but in sound they match the big-boys, and in balance and feel they pretty much outshine... thanks in no small part to that long upper horn that stops the bass hanging heavy on your left hand.
For gigging I would always go for one of these unless I had oodles of dosh and could afford a Rickenbacker!
It had a nice new set of strings on it, but I put a kink in the G string so fitted another one from a set of Fender strings that plays and sounds the same but lacks the black binding at the end.
In the set-up I flattened the neck profile quite a lot and brought the action down to an easy height that lets the notes flow out fast and fluently, but retaining a clear thump and grunt. The intonation rings clear with its harmonic and the bridge saddles took a fairly mid position in their adjustment range, suggesting the bridge was well placed.
A good working musicians' bass that you can run in stereo if you have two amps, or either one of the parallel inputs for mono. It's a bass that if you are not gigging yet would serve equally as an easy guitar for the fresh fingers of a student bassist. Thanks,Mark D Phillips....... (Phillips Cleartone Guitars)
Hang on... is that really just £243 for a stereo bass?
