Product Description
Here we have a late 60's Kay model K2B bass with everything in fine working order. The bass is a nice takeoff on a Gibson EB-3 bass style copy that Jack Bruce made famous with Cream in the 60'( funny enough, Stanley Clarke was also playing that model before being turned on to Alembic). Kay basses were made in Japan during the 60's-70's at the Kawai-Teisco factory which was known for high quality instruments and competed with the American market with their copies (known as the lawsuit era). Kawai-Teisco made this style similar to Matsumoku copies under the Aria, Conrad and Lyle badges (that I have owned, not sure about others) but the Kay basses have somewhat unique pickups and bridge.
The electronics include a pair of single coil pickups with chrome and black covers, volume and tone controls and a three way toggle. All of the electronics work as they should. The neck pickup as flaking of the chrome finish. The toggle is new with solid switching (clicks). There is nice tonal variation and the pickups are strong. The knobs are non-original speed style.
The neck is straight, I haven't needed to adjust with truss rod but I assume it works correctly. The action is low, fast and comfortable. The rosewood fingerboard has 20 frets, the scale measures 30 1/2" from nut to bridge (short scale). The neck is thin, measuring 1 5/8" at the nut and 2" at the pocket. This bass has the kay headstock that never had a logo on it (the logo is on the pick guard) The japanese chrome tuners are not original and are not a matching set of 4 but rather a matching pair on top and different matching pair on bottom.
The body is in relatively nice shape, with dings, scratches and scuffs. There is no finish checking or buckle rash. There is a chunk missing at the neck pocket (pic #10) which has been touched up, not to noticeable and doesn't affect playability. The 2 part pick guard is original. lower piece as a small chip missing. The thumb rest is missing and replaced by screws and finish washers. The bass is still glossy with a classic maroon finish.
The bridge is original and adjustable. The original chrome bridge cover is missing.
Older round wounds will come detuned for shipping.
There is no case but will be shipped well packed.
