Product Description
You've been looking for it, and you've found it, so you already know what you're looking at. One of the most iconic basses there is, rarer than rare, beautiful and unique sounding... the Rickenbacker 4005. This one has normal wear, some scuffs and scratches, and crazing on the fingerboard. I bought it (early 1990s) with a small crack on the back the time of purchase, it was repaired by the head tech, Leroy Aiello, at famed Mandolin Bros., who deemed it non-structural--and it hasn't expanded since. No refinishing, no missing or replacement parts, this one's still equipped as it was when it was made. Sure, there's buckle rash out back, plus 50 years of time on it, but the bass sounds and plays like you imagine it would... thunder unleashed. And if you look at all the other ones listed online, this one is priced to sell and has all its parts and is in as good shape as most. In other words, a deal... perhaps a steal.
Literally a handful of them were made, they don't come up for sale often, and when they do they cost more than many new cars. I bought it with a severance check when I could ill afford to buy anything, but I lusted after this bass like you do now... those curves, that sound... I was younger then, and had different priorities, but these days this bass just sits in its custom built case and doesn't get played, and while I hate the idea of not having it, I can't justify keeping it any more, so my loss and heartbreak will be your gain.
In case you don't already know... while Rickenbacker was not the first company to produce a hollowbody bass line, the Rickenbacker 4005 bass continues to be perhaps the most eloquent and prized. The 4005’s rounded top horn and distinctively smaller lower bout are unmistakably Rickenbacker, and illustrative of perhaps the most quintessential of all guitar architectures.
The famous Rickenbacker neck construction leading to its renowned playability contains two truss-rods ensuring adjustments that enable the best possible action in the hands of the right technician. The 4005 boasts Deluxe appointments including pearl-style triangular fret inlays on a 33.5-inch scale with 20 frets, plus checkered binding on the neck and body. The 4005 body is constructed from seasoned maple appointed with nickel-plated hardware including the renowned "R" tailpiece. It has a six-way adjustable bridge and two top "toaster" pickups. These pickups, used on countless Rickenbacker guitars, have a wide frequency range and are highly effective bass pickups producing a different quality sound compared to the highly popularized "horseshoe" pickup. Its electronics consist of a three-position selector switch, two volume and two tone control knobs and a "fifth" knob or master switch.
Sounds unlike any bass you have ever played.
I will ship it anywhere you want it to go, and will only charge for actual shipping costs, whatever is the best way to get it to you is fine by me--and local pickups are welcome--but you will pay the actual cost of the carrier's additional insurance.
