Custom Musicman Stingray 1986 Honeyburst

This is a 1986-ish stingray I'm not positive on the year but having had a 1988 stingray I know this one is earlier and also the bridge serial on this one dates to 1986. Many will say this era cranked out some of the best rays and I would agree.This ray has a rarer glossy-ish neck, its not a heavy gloss like the classics but its not a raw oiled wood like the newer rays. If you are familar with how Japan Fenders finish their necks Id say its a bit like that.The other cool features of this ray is the mute bridge which has all attached mutes still on it and functions perfect.

The frets are great essentially perfect, they have a tiny bit of markings but they are very clean, as are the electronics-no issues there. Everything is original to the bass with a few exceptions, the pickguard is era correct aftermarket but not original. You can see its not notched at the body for a truss rod access at that side as the were adjusted at the headstock back then like this one, the guard has little cracks and I have never removed it, it fits the patina of the body perfectly. There is also a G&L stamped tuner on the bass, it is identical to the others and made by schaller I believe, the original broke and was replaced with this. Its a little newer and shinier but works just fine.

Besides that I think everything is correct to it.All chrome is in good shape, the tuners however are a bit tarnished.

Lets get into the finish....the body is worn. Whats really weird is the neck overall is in very good shape. The body finish however is very worn. It has a TON of finishing checking, which is all the little crackles you see in the paint. It also has chips, dings, scratches, worn through spots. The body if I didn't show it in the photos is WORN. The neck fared much better which makes me think either the body finish was more fragile or the bass was someones main player and a heavy gigger but they kept it well working. The set up, electronics, strings are all great, it could head to a gig today. Its defiantly not a abused bass, just a well played in one.

The hardcase is SKB brand and not original its exactly like the musicman cases made today but not branded musicman. its a little roughed but solid, the latches are rusty, the cloth hinges are unglued so the lid open sits flat.
If you have a bad back the seller on this one is the 8 pound 9 ounce weight, thats 8 and a half pounds for a big ass ash bodied stingray with a maple neck, they rarely dip below 9. 

At the end of the day ive had 10 maybe 15 stingrays, I dont know as its more then I can easily reflect on...but this reminds me of one of my favorite old les pauls, its just a great instrument. Its a player, you want to play it, you enjoy playing it, I have 2 other newer rays now and this one is just warmer sounding-its gonna make the right person very
