Product Description
This rare bass (only 898 fretless Rippers were shipped between 1975 and 1979) was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan during the mid - 1970s Norlin period. It was designed by Bill Lawrence who was working for Gibson at the time. Bill Lawrence developed their 'Q-system' electronics, which had an impressive array of tones.
Instrument appears to be a mix of earlier and later construction styles, not unusual for this model. There is no string-through plate on the rear of the body, but the digit '2' stamped into the rear of the headstock indicates the second, more contoured body style. Earlier six digit stamped serial number is 550403, but both the number and 'Made In USA' are very lightly stamped and did not photograph well.
Long scale, fixed neck, string through body design. Ripper humbucking pickups, Gibson 3-point bridge, with Gibson branded open tuning machines. I'm told the original owner had initially replaced the tuning machines, then had them professionally restored and put back on the guitar. Tiny screw holes and impressions are visible on the rear of the headstock. 'Ashtray' hand rest is absent, case is not original.
