Product Description
As of 3/29/17 I have once again reduced the selling price to move this beautiful instrument.
I am the original owner of this VOX Sidewinder IV Sun Burst beauty.. This can be considered a barn find for sure in that for it's age, you will not find one in any cleaner condition.
After doing some research, I found out this model was mostly made in 1968 and some in 69'. It's impossible to know the exact year for sure.
My original receipt is there and it shows that I purchased this bass on June 17th, 1972.
Believe me, It's hard for me to part with this baby because first, it's such a cool bass and 2nd, I've had it now for more than 44 years. But it just sits in the case and doesn't get played. She deserves better.
The description is long and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
1st.
All the on board electronics work. The Bass and Treble Boost, G Tuner,
Built in Fuzz, Master Volume, Tone Controls and Front to Back Pick Up toggle
switch. Yes, this bass came loaded with everything imaginable.
The over sized tuning pegs are all original as are all the knobs and if you look at the picture, you will not see any rust on them.
Quite rare for being 48 years old. Heck, even I have some rust on me.
The
back pad that covers the access to the battery compartment and other
electronics is not only there, but as you can see in the picture, it's
in just excellent shape. It's not ripped or torn at all.
If you've
looked at other VOX Basses and Guitars from this era that have this pad, you will know what I
mean when I say just having this pad in itself is extremely hard to find let alone in this condition..
The
Bridge Cover is also there and this too is also a hard item to find.
These covers were
usually removed, lost or thrown out by most people because it might have caused a buzz if
it touched the strings.
I've seen restorers pay almost $200.00 just for these bridge covers alone.
The neck is long, it's fast, and I can't imagine a bass with a thinner neck than this model.
There
is minimal fret wear. I won't estimate how much is left, but certainly well over 95%. The overall
condition of the bass should tell you something about how much it was played and cared for.
I don't know the exact weight, but the bass is light
as a feather. It can't weigh more than 5 pounds at most.
The neck was removed and shimmed to improve the action. It is straight and it plays really nice.
This
was the only work done to the bass. As a result of this, there is
approximately a 1/16th to 1/8 inch gap where the neck and body meet. No
warp is noticed. The Truss Rod is still adjustable.
The finish has minimal or no cracking. it's almost pristine. There maybe a spot here or there but it does not effect the wood or playing. The worse cracking can be seen in the picture showing the back of the neck at the body.
The tail piece and tuning peg metal does show a bit of pitting but that's more than acceptable and normal for the age.
This bass also comes with the original hard shell case.
One top corner is dinged and the same end does have a crack in the wood about 2 inches long about 3/4 of the way down but neither one compromises the stability of the case at all.
The latches all work and have minimal pitting and no rust noticeable.
The handle is in excellent shape & it even comes with the key to lock it.
There is a bass hold down strap on the inside that is made of a harder more rigid plastic and it snapped a while back.. I
simply put a hole in it, moved it up an inch, screwed it in place and now it functions just
fine.
The lining is not torn or hanging and it too looks to be in great condition. For 48 years old, I would say the case is in excellent shape.
This case, in this condition, if it can even be found alone is close to a $400.00 value. I was offered almost that much 10 years ago by someone who needed one.
I
have all the parts, extras and case candy that originally came with the bass.
The
metal truss rod adjusting bar, the long plastic electronic tuning rod, a VOX
advertising tag that hung from the tuning key in the store, the original receipt and the blue striped plastic
Vox bag that holds them all.
I placed a
dancing note decal on the bass back in 72". There's also a tiny little label strip under the strings between the pickups that reads, "for the ear" and a 1" label maker strip by the distortion switch that reads, "L$D. Hey, it was 1972. Anyway, they have all been on there ever since and
I'll let you decide what to do with them. They should all come off easily.
Here are a couple of links that provide additional information on this instrument.
I'll be glad to provide additional pictures and answer and questions upon request.
This bass is being sold as is and not returnable.
***PLEASE NOTE*** Shipping costs cover professional packaging, insurance and shipping.
I will ship only to the Continental US.
