The Gibson banjos were equipped with different tone rings over the years, which were made by outside manufacturers. Sullivan's V35 tone ring is the result of metallurgic analysis and dimensional accuracy based on their own prewar Gibson. But no tone ring is going to sound its best without a quality rim to sit on. Their second achievement is Sullivan's old-growth forest, factory floor hard rock maple rim. These exquisite rims are made from rock maple that was cut about 100 years ago. Reclaimed from America's industrial age, they were originally milled for factory floors- and these boards are estimated to have been swaying in the breeze 200 years ago! This is today the only way to obtain the genuine old cut wood. Sullivan has developed production methods that re-dedicates this lumber solely for banjos, and are made into the finest banjo rims possible. The Vintage 35 banjo is the ONLY banjo made that employs the deadly combination of the V-35 tone ring and the factory floor rims. Even their own Festival models do not have it.
