just released for 2016, G&L has developed their own nitrocellulose
lacquer finishing process, and is applying it to limited runs of
guitars. A true glossy finish, not relic'd
or aged, with a lovely understated lacquer sheen. Now you can have

The
concept behind the jazz bass really comes from two directions. The
first being tone, and an emphasis on a brighter and more focused treble
response. The second idea was to make the neck more narrow and rounded,
to appeal to - you guessed it - jazz players. The end result is one of
the most iconic basses in the music world, played by artists in
virtually every genre. Despite its success, Leo Fender started G&L
with the notion that every one of his great designs was eligible for
improvement, and that philosophy lives on.

We've talked a lot
about Nitrocellulose Lacquer in previous listings, and in short "Nitro"
finishes are thinner and more pliable than modern poly finishes. The use
of this finish chemistry dates back to the early days of guitars, and
for many tone aficionados only Nitro will do. Is it all hype? Difficult
to say, but the concept of thinner more flexible finishes being
beneficial certainly makes sense. It's wood after all, and even on a
solid body guitar you want it to resonate. We've never played a "bad"
nitro guitar, and the look of a good nitro finish has a sophisticated
sheen that looks like no poly guitar.

The neck on this JB
is what they call their 'Modern Narrow' profile. It has a 1.5" width at
the nut and a 12" radius, which puts it solidly in J-bass territory. It
is a comfortable C shape that is easy to navigate and the 9.5 inch
radius works for just about any style of playing. The glossy nitro
tinted neck looks like a million bucks and the nitro finish feels less
sticky than a typical poly finish neck. As with any glossy neck in which
the frets are installed before the finish is applied -- and then
removed off the frets -- the fret finish and level of polish is
excellent.

The tone of the G&L Alnico V Vintage Jazz pickups
is exactly what you would hope for. The low end is smooth and focused,
while the mids and
treble pack the punch. The frequency response is wide open, which adds a
nice layer of sweetness to the single coil snap. As the jazz bass was
intended, the G&L JB
is a perfect fit for the player who needs to stand out in the rhythm
section. Whether you're playing jazz, funk, reggae or rock, the G&L JB can hold the groove.
