Product Description
Very rare Univox Custom Hi-Flier Phase 1 model branded as a "Princeton" with white finish and red & black tortoise style pickguard. Two single coil P-90 type pickups sound very nice and full (although they seem a bit microphonic). Pickups have individual on/off rocker switches and a universal volume and tone control. Bass neck has a chunky feel that fits nicely. Neck is straight, truss rod works and frets have plenty of life left. Truss rod works but has a slight rattle on certain frequencies. Action is low but could also be lowered if desired. This is a short scale bass that is currently strung with flat wound strings. Bass comes with an Ibanez gig bag.
The Hi-Flier debuted around 1968. It was loosely based on the Mosrite Ventures model, and featured two P-90 style pickups.
The very first Hi-Fliers had a three-tone sunburst finish, pearloid white pickguard and truss rod cover. These very early Hi Fliers are distinctly different from later models because they have much thicker bodies and necks, a "bar" type string tree that covers all six strings, larger fret markers for all frets except the two on the twelfth fret, dual black rocker switches on the pickguard, and a chrome raised-plastic "Univox" headstock logo (this is a rare chrome raised plastic "Princeton" logo).
Sometime in late 1968/early 1969, a limited special version of the Hi Flier, called the Hi-Flier Custom was produced. With this new model, a black finish was offered along with the standard sunburst finish. These models are very similar to the earliest Hi Fliers, except that they had a red tortoishell pickguard and truss rod cover, often slimmer neck/body (which became standard for all Hi Fliers around this time period), and a badge that read, "Univox Custom."
The is a pre owned bass that has seen some use so there are dings, dents, scratches etc. there are some finish cracks inside of both cutaways but they are cosmetic only. Overall condition is very good and all original except the bridge cover is missing.
See pics and video for more details.
I doubt you will come across another Hi-Flier as cool as this with this color scheme. Such a beauty!
