The use of a high-end Fender Custom Shop '60s Precision Bass split single-coil pickup delivers copious amounts of classic P Bass tone with clear mids and bold, engrossing low-end. The P Bass sound has long been heralded for the earth-shaking fullness, and the American Standard has it in spades. The rich, clear tones do an outstanding job filling in the space beneath the guitars which is especially good news for metal and other rock players who have to contend with overzealous guitarists in the mix.

In addition to the high-end Custom Shop pickup, the model features a myriad of welcomed updates. The undercoating is thinner than in previous generations which allows the wood to breathe better and the bass to resonant more. The neck is in a comfortable modern C-shaped profile with a smooth rosewood fingerboard and hand-rolled edges. The high mass vintage bridge provides excellent stability, as do the posiflex graphite support rods running through the neck.
