Custom Vox (Crucianelli Made) Cougar 1964 vintage electric bass guitar - 10017157

This rare VOX bass was produced in the Italian Crucianelli factory. It is the sought after Fireburst red color. The guitar appears to be completely original. It is missing the "Batwing" pick guard. The fretboard looks like Brazilian. The condition is very good to excellent with very little cosmetically to report. The binding has a split near the the heel. It is not separating and is still attached securely. Very few scratches and no buckle rash. Back of the neck is smooth with no chips or dings. One control knob is missing the trim insert. All parts are original. This bass really projects that hollow body 1960's bass vibe and tone. We will set up bass to optimize playability before it is shipped. Bass will arrive in a newer hard case, and this 52 year old instrument will be packed with care. There appears to be a serial number recessed on the back of the headstock but I was unable to read it.

The VOX Cougar bass shape was based on the Gibson EB-2 hollow body bass guitar, which in turn was modelled on Gibson's ES-335 guitar. The Cougar came in fireburst,(rare) red, and tobacco sunburst colours. The necks and scales varied between 1964 and 1967 with Gibson-like 2-on-a-side tuners. "Vox" was inlaid vertically on the large headstock.  It had a metal nut and a zero fret. The two single coil  were passive, and each had a volume and tone control; on Crucianelli factory made guitars the pickups are floating pickups with metal covers (toasters in 1964, the slots were replaced by holes in 1965). This bass appears to be a 1964 Crucianelli made instrument.  On EKO made Cougars, the pickups have plastic covers. There was a selector switch to choose either or both pickups. The unsecured floating  could be raised or lowered by means of adjustments, similar to a Gibson 'tune-o-matic' bridge of the same era. The  was floating, attached to the body by a metal rod. The pick guard on this example is missing in action. The Cougar was first made for VOX by Crucianelli in Italy in 1964 and 1965; the 1964 model should have a batwing shaped pickguard and looks identical to the Panoramic brand bass guitar made by Crucianelli in 1963. In 1966, EKO took over the manufacture of the VOX Cougar bass. The Crucianelli made VOX Cougars are extremely rare today as are Panoramic guitars made by Crucianelli.
