Product Description
The Danelectro Longhorn Bass has got to be one of the most unique (quirky?)-looking bass guitars ever made. Still this bass guitar has a well-deserved place in rock history. In the 1960s, the Longhorn was played by the likes of John Entwistle and Jack Bruce and it produces sounds that, like its looks, aren't easily forgotten.
Although popular, the original Longhorn bass wasn't without its shortcomings. Back then there was no adjustable truss rod, so now most vintage examples exhibit a distinct "smile" when viewed from the side. Additionally, the first control knobs were wooden. Today's model has an adjustable truss rod and plastic knobs.
The Longhorn's construction is true to Danelectro founder Nate Daniels' original design. The lyre-shaped plywood frame hollow body is topped with Masonite, and the edge is vinyl-covered. It still has an extended heel for secure neck anchoring and a 24-fret fretboard with a 29-3/4" scale length. The iconic "Coke bottle" headstock remains, as does the rosewood bridge, guitar-sized Kluson-style tuners and an aluminum nut. Further nods to the past include Dano's lipstick tube pickups, a transparent pickguard and a pair of concentric volume/tone control knobs.
But enough about the visuals! What's impressive is the fullness of the Longhorn's voice, especially when you consider that this "beast" weighs a ballerina-like 6 lb 0 oz! Providing the two lipstick pickups with individual volume and tone controls helps you to extract every tonal option available. There's a smoothness and warmth when you roll back the tone right on either pickup, but I was most impressed with the piano-like clarity and richness provided with all the pots "dimed". I say, "Season to taste".
