BASS GUITAR
EXTREMELY RARE
MADE IN EARLY 1960
ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT:
This information is taken from an appraisal that our client ordered from Gruhn Guitars. Since that date, we have verified that this is a very early 1960 year model by checking the pots etc. IT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT TO SAY THAT THIS IS A RARE AND COLLECTIBLE GUITAR. This is one of the most, if not the most, collectible basses in the vintage guitar market. An unbelievable guitar.
FROM THE APPRAISAL:
April 2, 2009
I have examined the attached emailed digital photos of the instrument described below, but have not seen the instrument itself. Below is my estimate, based on these photos, of the instrument’s value; however, it is not possible to judge from photos alone the exact state of originality and need of repair, so my appraisal is only accurate insofar as the photos are representative of the actual condition of the instrument.
The electric bass described below is, in our opinion, a Rickenbacker 4000 made in the year 1960.
Description: Serial number B915X. We have been provided the following information: “Has MAPLE NECK & WINGS-not Mah or Walnut as described in Rickenbacker sources. Look at pegheads please. Handmade. Has horseshoe pup. OHSC. Strap. 6 string saddle. Felt in place on string slide. No mods. Well played. All electronics work. Checked by Terry C. McInturff of TCM Guitars…. Oddities again: Hand turned metal tuning pegs and Maple Neck. Neck is very straight. No severe fret wear.” The owner has noted differences between this example and the specifications listed – and illustrated with examples of actual instruments – in The Complete History of Rickenbacker Guitars by Richard Smith. In addition to the information compiled by Smith, we note an example that we have recently had in hand that has the same features as the owner’s instrument – but with a lower serial number and with potentiometers dated the 6th week of 1960. (Source/date potentiometer codes for the subject of this appraisal were not provided). Based on that information and the specifications of this example – particularly the maple neck with walnut peghead “wings” – we believe this to be a 1960 model. We note that the 4000 bass from 1957-60 is an extremely rare instrument and that inconsistencies in specifications among early examples would not be surprising. This instrument does conform to the specifications of the model for 1960, with maple neck-thru construction, maple body wings, horseshoe pickup, gold back-painted clear pickguard, two knobs, slide-on bridge cover, unbound fingerboard with dot inlays, and natural finish. This example shows moderate playing wear and is with its original hardshell case.
“This model is highly sought by collectors and players.” Gruhn.
THESE ARE RARE, VERY RARE and one in this CONDITION may be ONE OF A KIND. Please look at all of the photos shown here and please message us if you wish to see more.
This bass guitar will ALWAYS INCREASE in value and due to its rarity and condition, this could well become one of those instruments that has its value double or triple in a short time. And if you are a player, as well as collector or investor, this bass guitar is for you.
ALL TRADES CONSIDERED.
