Custom 2016 Newson F-5 mandoin

Up for sale is a beautiful F-5 mandolin built by Michigan-based luthier Paul Newson. I obtained this mandolin recently at Gruhn’s Guitars here in Nashville. George Gruhn described this mandolin as “exceptionally fine sounding,” and I have to agree!

I have used this on several gigs over the last couple months, but my old mandolin is up for sale at Carter’s, and I have somewhat of a sentimental connection to it (I used it on a lot of gigs and recordings). I’ve been torn about what to do, but ultimately I’ve decided I’d like to try to get my old one back. 

That takes nothing away from how good this mandolin is, though. It is in like-new condition, although there’s a little wear near the tuning pegs closest to the fancy end of the headstock. The instrument has a very sweet, musical, bell-like tone that is perfect not just for bluegrass but pretty much any style. It also has a great chop and excellent volume. The playability is awesome; I have it set up with low action/no buzzing. Paul Newson is building some incredible mandolins, and this one is no exception. Not to mention, he and his wife are great folks (just met them down here in Nashville). Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass has been playing a Newson mandolin for years.

I’ve installed a K&K Twin Internal pickup. Comes with original hardshell case. Newson mandolins run $8,500 new. I’m asking $7,750 here ($7,650 over on Mandolin Cafe), given that it is still basically new.
