Custom VINTAGE 1920s BANJO: | Old-time 4-string Tenor, 19 frets-- Play as-is or Restore |
Product Description
+ Vintage ~1920s "no-name" 4-string Tenor Banjo +
Play as-is or Restore+ Circa 1910-1930s, Wood + Metal Body,
+ Closed-back with design on wood, 19 frets
+ No name on peghead, possibly listed inside the back
+ Sometimes called a "riverboat," "good time," "jazz," "old-time," etc. style banjo
...NOW STRUNG, THE BANJO HAS NICE WARM WOODY TONE...When I first listed this banjo, it was not strung. The banjo is now playable.
Still needs some TLC and elbow grease to restore, or play as is. Interesting design, worth a little effort to really spruce it up.
+ Relatively good, solid condition for its age.+ New floating bridge, Otherwise all original.
+ Armrest is not currently attached.
No-name in the style of Vega (?) Slingerland (?) Harmony (?) Supertone (?), Irish (?)... I've had this banjo for about 20 years, it's time to let someone else with more time/skills have at it.
FREE SHIPPING in the "Lower 48" States. Sorry, no returns.

This banjo appears to be from the 1910s-30s. I couldn't ID it exactly. Perhaps someone with banjo knowledge could. But here are some things I can tell you--
+The metal resonator flange ring has a distinctive bowtie/batman design. The design is very close but not an exact match with this 1920s Supertone Irish tenor banjo on eBay:
+ The rear wood resonator has a nifty painted "rural" design. A1920s Kay/Harmony resonator I've seen had the same pattern in a different shade. ... Some Vega banjos of the 1920s had the metal dowel in the center of the wood resonator back as well as a sort-of similar headstock. Could this be a no-name Vega?... Some Slingerland and Montgomery Wards Concertone models had semi-fancy backs like this.
+ Headstock/peghead is like no-name tenor banjos built by Slingerland from 1918-1944. Other similar headstocks are Gretsch's Rex or Claraphone, though those have a dot that mine doesn't.
+ Compact Grover-style tailpiece says "patent pending," and Grover got their patent in 1914. I found the same "pending" tailpiece on "unbranded" 1920s banjos selling on eBay.
Thanks for looking.
