Product Description
Vintage Antique 1920's (mid to late) Concertone 17 Fret Tenor Banjo + Hardcase in fully functional condition. This 90+ year old banjo has a fresh set of Dunlop Irish tenor strings and is tuned to GDAE.
This neat antique banjo features a solid maple neck, rosewood fretboard and heel cap, and a thick high quality laminated maple tonepot with beautiful curly maple veneer. The original tuning pegs were missing so a matching set of period correct vintage 1920's era Grover friction tuners have been installed. The ebony nut appears to be original and has been set up for either CGDA light gauge or GDAE heavy gauge strings. The Waverly tailpiece is original but the hangar bolt is a slothead screw replacement.
There were some missing banjo hooks and shoes as well as mounting screws but equivalent parts bin replacements have been installed. The neck under the first four frets was repaired at some point in the past but holds up just fine. There is relief in this neck as well due to the substantially thinner neck profile compared to other vintage banjos but instrument is still easily playable with fingers or flat pick. Bridge is a modern replacement Grover ebony topped maple 2 foot style. Frets have been lightly re-crowned and are ready to go. There are numerous areas of nickel plating wear and light playing and handling wear but overall instrument is in good condition but because of the neck repair I'm rating the instrument as fair. Hardcase is not original to the instrument but is period correct and fits good.
Concertone was a brand name of Montgomery Wards department stores and the actual manufacturer was likely Slingerland judging from hardware and choices of wood used. This is an affordable vintage antique banjo that is fun to play and hard to put down, you won't be disappointed!
American made quality!
Due to high UPS & FEDEX rate increases, I now prefer to ship USPS. This neat old banjo will be bubble wrapped inside hardcase and professionally packaged.
