Product Description
“Tone King” woodburned into the dowel stick. There’s a mark from a missing logo on the headstock. Tone King was a jobber brand, not a manufacturer...this banjo was undoubtedly made by one of the U.S. banjo manufacturers of the day such as Bacon & Day, etc. , but I don’t know who actually made this instrument.
Maple body and neck (birdseye maple rim). Rosewood fretboard, headstock overlay, and heel cap.
I’m not a banjo expert, but my best guess is that this instrument is ca. 1920s-1930s. 10 7/16“ from the nut to the 12th fret, so the scale length is about 20.875“. 17 frets. Neck is 1 3/16“ wide at the nut. The body diameter is 10 3/4“.
Definitely needs some work. Lots of dirt and some finish checking. Appears to be some minor water damage on the treble side “shoulder" and the edge of the neck heel in that area, not too terrible. Looks like some ancient hide glue seepage on the back of the rim behind that water damage from a OLD reglue of the rim “cap" (this is the dark spot you see in the pics...looks like it could be removed easily). There are some cracks and/or seam separations on the maple overlay that covers the back of the rim (I call it the rim cap). The skin head is torn and needs to be replaced.
A check with a straight edge shows that the neck has a slight back bow.
Almost no fret wear at all, very slight. Fret ends are sharp and need to be filed. The tailpiece and bridge are missing. No strings. No case.
Sold AS IS for repair or parts, NO returns or price adjustments. I make no guarantees as to the feasibility, practicality, or possibility of any repairs.
Note: Unfortunately, due to the new CITES regulations I can no longer ship instruments constructed with any kind of rosewood internationally.
