Custom 1.8 Antique Shakuhachi 1912-18

This is a very rare two-piece shakuhachi. The flute was made in Japan in the early 1900's by shakuhachi master maker, Syuzan during the Taisho era. 
In the key of 'D' it is suitable for play in traditional Japanese ensemble with koto and shamisen. This shakuhachi has great tonal balance, volume and range. Sometimes when I play it I can feel the proud samurai tradition that is behind it.

Two root cracks were sealed in the professional shop in Japan and are stable. I sent the flute to Monty Levinson, a world renowned skauhcahi maker on the west coast, to do some work on the bore and utaguchi. His 'hanko' (signature) is under the hanko of Syuzan on the back side; there is inlayed rattan binding at the joint with urushi coated bore.
Looking at the root end yu can see it has a nice bone inlay which I have not seen before on other flutes.

The instrument comes with a hard case, formerly used for probably a coronet. The case is well worn and the two go together like they were made for each other.
