Keiper Resolute J-Bass

A full working overhaul and renovation to a superb playing standard.
This bass will meet almost any requirements either for gigging and practicing; easy incisive playing now after a full careful set up on new Fender medium gauge strings.It arrived as an active bass with all the sludgy tone that brings and need of a new battery at the most awkward onstage moments!I rewired it as a Jazz bass and used a jazzbass pickup at the neck end, and then to mix in other tones I fitted a Gibson type EB3 bass humbucker at the bridge end.Incidentally I wired them out of phase so with both volumes on full you get a freaky thin jazzy tone, but back off either a quarter turn, and the signal fattens up powerfully with thumping tone.
I don't like basses with elephant ear tuners sticking out at right angles... here I have remounted them angled back like on some of the better Ibanez basses.
You will see the curved by sun or time wiring cover plate on the back... I quite like its distressed road-worn look and it is no issue as you play, but just mentioning it in case you don't see it in the photo.
The body deserves a mention, being I think more interesting than single slab guitars... the maple neck mounts into the light coloured maple centre section and those two dark lines are dark cedar laminations, while beyond them the blue outer sections are baswood I think... though the bass is fairly heavy on the shoulder so there is a bit of mystery there and I think perhaps they could be ash.
I will also just mention the jack socket: it is the sealed unit type not the open one you can adjust or fiddle with the sprung contacts on; it works well and makes good contact, but to my mind has a fairly light or soft action click-in as you push the jack into it... it stays in okay but pulls out quite easily as you remove the plug, so I suggest for gigging that you run the guitar lead up over the guitar strap button, and then down to the jack socket to make it one hundred percent safe... but you probably do that already anyway?
With the set of medium gauge Fender strings, set up was a pleasure, as the truss rod was well behaved and brought the neck to a reduced but adequate relief.I levelled one or two fret-wires to get a clearer ring in places but not a big deal considering this is not a new guitar.
I cut all four string grooves in the nut so the strings need hardly a squeak of pressure to get clear ringing notes in the first few frets... and right on up the neck I kept it as low and fast as still gave strong resonance.
Keiper as a brand are far from famous, but their basses are right there doing what you ask them to do and better than many we value the names of more; and this one having shed its dreadful active electrics you will be pleased to find it has a clear funky tone too!
