For your consideration we have real treasure here in this 1929 year tenor, or “tango” style banjo from Vega, known as the “Little Wonder”. 85xxx serial. The Banjo has an 11” rim and weighs 6.3lbs with the resonator installed. Original case included (functional but with heavy wear). These cherished instruments are well-respected for good reason, and this example has survived in excellent condition, still retaining its original case. The banjo has undergone a total professional setup, and is guaranteed to give an outstanding performance. It sounds and plays as good as the day it was made—and maybe even better. Fretwear is extremely minimal; no replaced or damaged frets. A new bridge has been installed. The tuner knobs turn easily and hold their positions well. Everything has been meticulously examined for optimal intonation and accuracy. The banjo produces a superbly classic twang that is as hypnotic as it is fun to play. Old, beautiful skin, new strings, original tailpiece and hardware, down to the screws. The fretboard looks just incredible.
The Vega had been kept tucked away for many years, in a smoke/pet free Southern California home. As a result it has been preserved very well. The wood has been kept clean and dry, and the average scuffs and scratches add character and authenticity. The headstock looks fantastic, lovely antiquing of the finish with no chips or cracks in the wood. Subtle but astonishingly beautiful finish checking is visible in the lacquered neck, no indentations, and no repairs have ever been warranted. A metal rivit in the case has led to a small amount of wear in one area just behind and below the headstock. The metal resonator looks tremendous in plated chrome, there are some expected general scratches to the metal surface.
The William Lewis & Son case is a wonderful companion to the banjo—they have never been apart from each other! the case has degraded somewhat, has rusting hardware, and might deserve refurbishing, but is still functional.
