Product Description
Vintage 1970's Era OME Long Neck 5-String Banjo with Installed Sliding Capo & Case! #36335
Blues Angel Music is pleased to present this 1970's Vintage OME Long-Neck 5-String Banjo! It is in Very Good Cosmetic Condition for an instrument of its age, and 100% Fully Functional Playing Condition! It has various marks, dings and BEAUTIFUL finish crackling/crazing that is expected of an instrument of this age, and is so uniform, especially on the back, that its incredible (see pics)! The neck is straight and the frets have moderate wear (visible grooves pictured) that does not affect play. Head has moderate pick swirl. Beautiful abalone double-binding! The tuners are all working as they should be. Neck is securely attached to the body. There is light to moderate wear and oxidation on metal pieces. Although we can't confirm, the four tuning pegs on the peghead appear to be carved ivory! There is a 5th String sliding capo installed! Originally an open-back, this banjo has been fitted at some point with a different flange, and a handsome paneled resonator. It also has been fitted with an under-saddle pickup and input jack. Comes with a wooden, plush-lined case in similar cosmetic condition. It has 4 working latches (2 non-working), and no hinges (the top is removable). Definitely not watertight, but it works well for standard storage and transport. The banjo you see is the one you will receive! We have taken great care to provide 25 high-quality photos to show condition as well as possible. We invite you to view its pictures carefully and to contact us with any questions you may have.
About the OME Long-Neck Model (Except from OME's Website)In the late 1950’s, well known folk musician Pete Seeger added three extra frets to his 5-string open-back banjo to expand its playing range. This worked well for Pete and when he used this instrument while playing with the very popular Weavers folk group, other musicians such as the Kingston Trio, The Brothers Four, Peter Paul and Mary, The Limelighters, The Chad Mitchel Trio, and the New Christy Minstrels all started using this unusual looking 5-string banjo.
Overnight the long neck banjo became a folk icon of that era and demand for this instrument soared. At that time, the original Vega company was the only builder of the Long Neck 5-string which was high priced and of marginal quality. This inspired the founder-owner of OME to start building these banjos under the name ODE, which were produced from 1960 to 1966. OME still offers these Long Neck banjos on special order. They have 25 frets, 31.19” scale, and are available in both open-back and resonator Professional and Custom Series models.
