Custom Fender Precision Bass 1965 Black

An excellent example of a P-bass from this era, and it is ALL ORIGINAL apart from the refinished body. Tonally, I’d describe this bass as very resonant and a bit more bright and present than many similar age P’s I’ve encountered. It is properly set up with fairly low action (strings are D’Addario med. gauge Chromes), it plays very evenly up and down the neck, and string-to-string balance is excellent. The pickup is nice and strong and sounds exactly like it should. Weight is a very light 8 pounds, 0 ounces with the chrome bridge covers on, give or take an ounce.
 
The body refinish, which I would describe as “semi-pro,” was done in nitrocellulose lacquer sometime before I acquired the bass in 1997.  It has some sanding scratches, but it conveys a nice authentically vintage look overall. The pickup wires have been resoldered to their pot connections (which would have been necessary as part of the refinishing process), but all parts appear to be original down to the last screw. From the presence of yellowish white paint in the control cavity and neck pocket, it is likely that Olympic White was the original color. The serial number and dates present on the neck stamp and pots are all in the exact range for Sept. 1965. The case is the original blonde tolex one, in fair-to-good condition. It is functional and all the latches work.
 
Condition-wise, here are the details:

There is some finish wear on the treble side of the neck, as shown in one of the photos. Due to the typical cellulose pickguard shrinkage, there are cracks traversing the uppermost screw holes on each side, but they have been successfully glued. The truss rod functions well and has plenty of slack in both directions. The neck has rarely required any adjustment since I’ve owned the bass. The frets are in good shape with no buzzing. The previous owner had some crowning done north of the 12th fret. I’ve almost always used flatwound strings, so fret wear has been minimal since I’ve owned the bass.
There are a couple of cracks at the high end of the fingerboard (shown in one of the photos), but they've been stable since I’ve owned the bass. A competent repairperson could easily remedy them if desired.
