Product Description
This bass is very resonant and weighs 9lbs 6oz ("fully clothed" with both ashtray bridge and pickup covers), with a punchy and powerful tone. While these basses came with a few different colored pickup bobbins, this bass sports one gray bobbin and one red bobbin, consistent with an instrument made late in '82. There's plenty of growl and top end cut available from the bridge pickup, while still providing thick, sinewy low end. The neck pickup has a bit more bass oomph and smooth Jazz fundamental thump. The added versatility of the stack knob configuration allows for a wide range of tones, and there's a unique palette of sounds available when using both pickups in unison. Rolling back the tone of either single coil to almost zero gives the bass an extra pillowy and warm sound that still has definition. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, this Fullerton Jazz Bass sounds great and has undeniable visual vintage appeal.
The maple neck has a fairly slender C profile with an ambered gloss nitro lacquer finish and slab rosewood fretboard. The traditional 1 1/2" nut width makes navigating the full 34" scale effortless, and the profile has the gently sloping shoulders and an overall fast, slim feel that characterized the Fullerton era basses. The bass features the original slender frets which have their full, original height and show only light wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-6, with virtually no wear further up the neck. The fretboard has a vintage-correct 7 1/4" radius, and the bass plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots and a responsive truss rod. On the headstock, the original reverse tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The original Jazz Bass waterslide decal is intact and mint, and the neck heel has the clean, original pencil date from 12/15/82.
The original electronics are intact and the wiring is untouched, with CTS pots that date to the 28th week of 1982. Vintage-style cloth wiring is used between the pots, and the pickups have their stock plastic leads. Both pickups have 1982 date stamps on their bobbins as well. All of the original hardware is present, including the very unique tortoise pickguard (this pattern was only used on Fullerton instruments), stock thumb rest, original bridge, and ashtray chrome covers. While the serial number is in the 13,000 range with the correct V prefix, the Fender Vintage Reissue website notes the inconsistency of the neck plates and the large number initially produced (a range of 1-3 years outside the commonly agreed upon serial number ranges for each year is not uncommon). Cosmetically, this bass is quite clean overall, with very faint targeted buckle rash on the back south of the neck plate, and a few small nicks and scratches in the clear coat. There is also one tiny spot of wear through the finish adjacent to the forward strap button. It's a remarkably well cared for instrument, and stands up to the hype that surrounds the early and rare Fullerton-made instruments.
A clean Fender tweed G&G hardshell case with red plush interior is included.
