Leo Fender can be credited with producing two the most iconic electric bass designs ever: The "JB" and "PB"
bass guitars. Leo's SB-2 takes the best of both the P and J bass
worlds, with both a split middle pickup and a multi-pole J-style MFD bass pickup.

The two G&L MFD pickups have what all MFD
pickups are known for: Great clarity, a broad frequency range and
plenty of output. With just two volume controls, there's a host of
available sounds, all with lots of fullness and presence. Playing though
a BBE Bmax head, Carvin power amp and Carvin 4x10
cabinet, the general sound characteristics were round and piano-like,
with ample low end extension, note separation and room-filling presence.
The MFD pickups
pack a lot of punch, and depending on your amp, you can get clean smooth
tones, or push the volume controls all the way up for a little growl
and graininess. This is not a guitar to play full up all the time:
There is a lot to explore mixing and blending the two volume controls,
which essentially act like tone/balance controls. The controls are also
nicely reactive, and small adjustments yield noticeable tone shifts, so
it's easy to tweak on the fly without a lot of fuss.

The G&L
#8 neck with it's 1.5" width at the nut is comfortable to play, and for
guitar players who also play bass, the neck is easy to adjust to and
plays fluidly. Hands down -- no pun intended -- we are big fans of of
the narrow JB style
neck profiles, and the G&L #8 is one of the best playing examples
out there. The now-standard 9.5" radius gives a bit of an old world feel
to this bass and, makes string-to-string transitions effortless.

Anchoring
the the guitar at the other end of the headstock is G&L's patented
saddle lock bridge. Solidly constructed and anchored into -- not just on
-- the body, the saddle lock bridge also features a locking set screw
on the side. The set screw is used to clamp the saddles together tight
for increased coupling and sustain.

The G&L SB-2 is deceptively simple, but extremely flexible. With its traditional yet elegant looks, the MFD
pickups give the SB-2 a modern edge that can be percussive and funky,
or dialed back for clean springy tones that are great for jazz or
fusion. If you need to cover a lot of sonic territory but appreciate the
simplicity of just two shiny chrome knobs, check out the SB-2.
